Back in the Saddle: Cecelia’s Comeback Story

When Cecelia began her journey with Deep Creek Physical Therapy, she was unsteady on her feet and fearful of everyday movement. Even walking across her living room felt daunting. She had stopped participating in the activities she once loved — especially her daily bike rides. It had been over two years since she'd last pedaled through her neighborhood.
Her goals were clear: walk with confidence, dance again, and most importantly — get back on her bike.
We designed a land-based therapy program focused on rebuilding strength, coordination, and confidence. Starting with indoor and outdoor gait training, weight-shifting, and strengthening activities, we helped restore her normal walking rhythm. As she progressed, we introduced balance pad work and dance-inspired movements to reawaken her sense of control and joy.
After just eight weeks, Cecelia was walking confidently, and she was able to return to her local community dances. Then came the next real challenge: BIKING. We practiced bike-specific tasks: kicking the kickstand, swinging her leg over the frame, and hopping on/off the seat. Each step was a milestone. We also made sure not to forget the helmet.
Finally, the moment arrived. Cecelia mounted her bike, and I jogged beside her, offering a gentle push. As she gained momentum, she called out with a grin, “I’m gone” — and just like that, she was off and riding down her familiar street once again, reclaiming a part of herself.
At Deep Creek Physical Therapy, we don’t just treat symptoms — we help people rediscover what moves them. Last I heard, not only was Cecelia biking through her neighborhood in Florida, but she had been able to return to biking the Rails to Trails back in her and my home state of Pennsylvania.
